West Ham hooligans made 'Britain's hardest man' and Mickey Rourke run for their lives

East End gangster Danny Woollard made an extraordinary claim that West Ham United's Inter City Firm (ICF) made 'Britain's hardest man' Lenny McLean and the likes of Mickey Rourke 'run like scared rabbits'

One of the most feared men in the country was sent running by West Ham's notorious football hooligan firm during a boxing fight, a former gangster has claimed.

Towering bareknuckle boxer Lenny McLean gained his reputation as the "hardest man in Britain" from having thousands of underground fights, as well as rubbing shoulders with the criminal underworld.

But, according to ex-East End mobster Danny Woollard, he met his match when West Ham's infamous Inter City Firm (ICF) stormed a fight night he was headlining.

In his book Wild Cats, he claimed the hooligans rocked up at Woodford Football Club after an ICF member was supposedly battered unconscious in the audience. The likes of Gene Hackman, Mickey Rourke and Jaws actor Richard Kiel were all said to be in attendance.

Things turned nasty when a drunk reveller from the crowd grabbed the shorts of a fallen fighter in the ring to prevent him getting back up.

And according to Danny's book: “Lenny McLean and a few very large black men started to give this drunken youth a good kicking.

“Barry Dalton and Billy Williams stopped it.

“Bill dragged this young man out, but unbeknown to anyone, ‘The Bomb’ set about this chap and gave him a proper hiding.”

Billy ‘The Bomb’ Williams was a notorious heavyweight brawler, who was once trained by Muhammad Ali’s mentor Angelo Dundee.

However, Danny added: “Once the boy had regained consciousness, he started ringing his mates up. He was a member of West Ham’s notorious Inter City Firm.”

Explaining the carnage that unfolded, he wrote: “They all came, motor-loads of them, tooled up and looking for revenge.

“Roy Shaw, McLean, Williams, Carrington, Mickey Rourke and all the actors ran like scared rabbits to the club house, Woody’s, and locked themselves safely away.

“The Inter City Firm smashed the place to pieces.

“If they could have got hold of Billy Williams they would have killed him – quite deservedly, I thought, as he had taken a terrible liberty.

“Anyhow, after that, I gave up boxing promoting for a while and concentrated on my scrap business, just to let things quieten down for a while.”

According to Danny, legendary McLean, who died of lung cancer in 1998, faced more drama earlier in the night when his rival Barry Dalton supposedly pulled a gun on him.

He wrote: “Barry was shadow boxing and warming up with Bill ‘The Bomb’ Williams.

“When McLean walked into the dressing room, Barry went straight to his kit bag and pulled out a ‘38’ revolver.

“He said to Lenny, ‘Any saucy from you today and I’ll shoot you in the f***ing head.’

“Lenny had Britain’s strongest man with him but the two of them just melted. Lenny said, ‘Barry, we don’t want any trouble’ and shook Barry’s hand.”

McLean, who had ties to the criminal underworld, participated in more than 3,000 fights during his life.

But if Woollard is to be believed, he felt fear when the ICF came to town at the boxing.

The West Ham firm was co-founded by Cass Pennant in the 1970s and garnered a sinister reputation for leaving a business card on the fans they attacked that read: “Congratulations, you’ve just met the ICF.”

They then hit worldwide fame with the release of hooligan film Green Street, starring Elijah Wood.

And the story about McLean and the famous actors apparently running for their lives was recently speculated about on Youtube channel The Enquirer 1.0.

One viewer replied: “They were the good old days, it's a different world now.”

Another added:” I think you can safely remove Mickey Rourke from any band of hard men, he’s all Hollywood.”

And one sceptic wrote: “Can't see that lot running from the ICF.

“In fact I'm pretty sure they would have welcomed a set too with any firm and no doubt would have given them a hiding to boot.”

This Billy just sounds like a nutcase bully as much as anything. Tooled up and driving over people, they aren't people who are really 'hard'.

He was a sniper and West Ham. There’s footage of him jumping in the ring at Woodford, mid fight and throwing some out of it

Find it hard to take it seriously that anyone would take on Richard Kiel with them Hampstead? Odd job would have sorted it.

Yes chim spot on, unfortunately for me I had to avoid him. When playing football for the school at Cumberland rd playing fields I had an agreement with the teacher that if he came over to the playing fields, which he often did as he only lived round the corner that I wouldn't bother getting changed out of my football kit but get straight into the teachers car and hide, otherwise I wasn't playing. It's the only situation where your parents would say hit him back and he will never bother you again didn't apply

Bill The Bomb's dead? Maybe I can come out of hiding behind the sofa now?

Only joking (sort of) but my brother who is much more clued in to this stuff than me still talks about the day...er...how shall I put this? Bill got rather upset, understandably I think, when he tried to ride his horse into the Abbey Arms in the Barking Road.

The Landlord said something incendiary and so out of order it was no wonder The Bomb went off.

He foolishly said 'Hello Bill mate, nice to see you and you know you're always welcome mate...but...the horse?'

Absolute. Fucking. Nutcase.

Re: West Ham hooligans made 'Britain's hardest man' and Mickey Rourke run for their lives
I used to alter my route from school I was SWHT he was Faraday to make sure I didn't bump into him. There are so many stories out there

The reason for Bill’s promising career ending was an eight-year jail sentence he received for his part in an attack carried out by himself and notorious east London hardman and criminal Tommy hole.

It was 1975. A local man, James Venton had fallen foul of Hole so he called upon aspiring pro boxer and hardman Bill Williams to teach the man a violent lesson. What followed was not about exacting retribution, but building a reputation for Hole. He and Bill went to Venton’s home. The two men dragged him into the street, where Williams held Venton down while Hole ran over him three times with a car. The brutality of the case made the headlines and Venton agreed to act as chief witness for the prosecution. Hole and Bill were jailed for seven years for attempted murder.

In prison Bill apparently took no nonsense and was feared by cons and screws alike as witnessed by prison guard Phil Curry :

“Bill the Bomb was the most fearsome, intimidating man I ever met. He was probably the hardest man I ever met in prison. Everybody feared him.”

You are are not wrong about the late Billy Williams [ jango ] .A couple of his pals once brought him along to an away game up north back in the day. Now that was an experience shall I say. However, he must of made an impressed under Angelo Dundee in America as someone I know, who attended his funeral, said there was a representation from the States.

Reading WHOer's ''testimonials'' on Dalton and Williams, maybe Mclean and co really did shit their pants when they arrived on the scene...

The article made me chuckle to be fair, as did the pic of us scrapping with the Y's.

Billy Williams was an absolute psycho. I upset one of his mates when I was at school he saw me at Beckton rec and gave me a right hander it still hurts now. He used to live in Jenkins Rd Plaistow same road as Mark Noble a fearsome boxer he could never get a fight ,boxers three years older than him refused to get in the ring, he went to Miami to box and the mafia were after him when he messed with one of their daughters he had to come home Angelo Dundee was training him. Not a nice person to mess with and not a nice person at all

Re: West Ham hooligans made 'Britain's hardest man' and Mickey Rourke run for their lives
Barry Dalton was a lunatic. One of my mates trained with him over at the Peacock Gym in Canning Town and we were waiting in a minicab office for a cab one night when he walked in. We’d been waiting there for 20 minutes and our cab rolled up outside, 4 of us. We were going to Ilford from East Ham. As we walked out the front passenger door flew open and Dalton climbed in , said hello to my mate and said ‘you don’t mind dropping me off lads do you ? ‘… a quick look at my mates face told us not to argue with the nutter. Who then told the driver to drop him at the Brit at Plaistow before heading to Stratford. Dalton couldn’t have been more polite as he sat in the front and chatted with the 4 of us crammed in the back seats. As he fiddled with the handgun that he had pulled out of his jacket and put bullets in the chamber one by one then showed us the machete that he was carrying in a plastic bag… as he jumped out the car he apologised that he’d no money for the cab fare as he was out collecting from someone that owed him dough. A year or so later he had his brains blown out in north London doing a drugs deal with some Jamaicans that went tits up.
